For me, iChoose is much faster. LaunchBar is nice on a plane or in other places where using a mouse isn't convenient, but if I am at my desk iChoose works better for me.

In addition, as someone else mentioned, you can set iChoose to open different sites with different browsers. I don't believe LB has that capability.

It's also nice to be able to quickly change default browsers and use a consistent set of bookmarks.

I'll also mention FruitMenu. Very handy to get at all my apps, docs, music, pictures, etc. very quickly. For awhile I used it for url's also, until I discovered iChoose.

My vote is FruitMenu

With a two-button mouse, this app makes my Mac feel complete.

I love this app...

For me, the X11//Fink combo is hard to beat. It opens the the door to a world of FREE and great applications. A must for anyone looking to capture the power of *nix with OS X.

Honourable mention goes to TeXShop, for allowing me to discover LaTeX on a Mac.

Yes, I feel the same way. I absolutely love Fruit Menu. I have used it to replce my dock. I dragged EVERYTHING (except for the Finder and Trash) off the dock and hid it. Now I use FruitMenu for everything!! I have even gotten rid of Snard because FruitMenu does everything Snard did, but MUCH better and faster. For example, FruitMenu allows me to see the thumbnails in my Desktop Pictures folder. Snard didn't allow me to do that, and neither did many other menu apps. I'm am so glad there's FruitMenu! It makes viewing and finding things on my Mac so much easier and faster.

Since I use Mac OS X for all my computing needs, I can't say that there is a single "best" application for me.

But, I'd have to say one of the best development tools that I use is Cocoa Browser. This makes reading the Cocoa documentation super easy & makes me much more efficient of a programmer.

Thoth and HotApp.

Thoth because it handles all my newsgroup needs. I used to love MT-Newswatcher but got tired of all the helper apps.

HotApp becuase it allows me to have hotkeys for so many things. F11 launches MacNN Forums. F12 (with a simple AppleScript) launches all my must-read web sites in one keystroke. Launches all my apps in keystrokes as well. Many other things as well...

In which case, this is my thread.

vLc is my favorit application. It is so cool!

You can watch vcds, dvd, divx, the list goes on and on (can't play .mov that is what QT is for). You can also play dvds from any region with out hacking your firmware which is really great for thoes off use running X only.

Another cool app is DVD backup. You can go get a DVD from blockbuster, back it up on your computer, and watch it latter when you have the time. It can also remove the ccs and region coding (and some other coding I forget). The cool thing about removing the region coding is that you can then watch it in Apple DVD player buy opening up the Video_TS folder.

Best IRC application would have to be Snak, I mean it pretty much ripped off mIRC but who cares. mIRC is a really good irc client, and snak just copies most of the stuff. I like the channel bar at the top, it is very usefull. ircle is an ugly ugly thing.

So in a summary:
1. vLc
2. DVD Backup
3. iSync
4. Safari
5. Mail
6. iCal
7. Address Book
8. Snack
9. iTunes
10. Micro$oft Word

Now if there was only a 'good' utility to rip your own dvds so they can fit on a cd. Like the Wincrap people have utilities like DVDtoVCD or something. Now that would be cool, to pop in a dvd and rip it straight to vcd. I think you can even choose the quality, to fit on 1 disk or 2.

shame on everyone who put in parts or the whole office suite.

in not only my humble opinion I can well say that Offfice is the clunkiest software ever written for OS X.

it isn't even written for OS X, it is refurbished for OS X

I don;t use software for emotional reasons. I need software that I can depend on and that works well withing the environment of other programs I use. My income depends on it. Many people do not care for Microsoft products. I agree that word is slow and clunky, as you put it, but it does allow for easy intergration with other users (compatibility) and it works well with other software such as excel and entourage. Both programs are arguably the best programs of their class.

In addition, if Microsoft did not support the Mac Platform, our investments in Apple hardware, and Apple in general, would be worth a lot less to most of us in the business community.

As a new Mac user - a new COMPUTER user really - this has been really interesting for me. It's very reassuring to find so many developers making sexy software for OS X. I plan to give Omniweb a go.

Thanks to all those who gave an inadvertant lesson.
