IE X.2.3 is coming out today from here. This will be the last version.

"The update will offer security and performance enhancements, as well as improved browser compatibility for enterprise users who work on a network with secure authentication or with proxy servers, according to the MacBU. It will be made available as a free update on its Website, while Internet Explorer 5.1.7 for Mac OS 8/9 users will be available in the next month with similar security and performance improvements."

Probably just the bug fixes they had planned to include in the next major update. That is, until they got mad and went home. Can't say I really care.

I like Safari, but as has been mentioned so many times before, it's still beta. I currently use Camino with IE as a backup. Or sometimes Safari if I know I'm only on specific sites that work with it and I want a little faster speed (particularly the snap back cache).

Downloaded and installed for sh*ts and grins - Safari still loads faster. I clicked the link to the forums here, and waited, waited and waited. While waiting, I opened Safari, clicked the forums bookmark, and it loaded before IE was finished.

But hey! It was fun downloading.

The *only* problem I have with Safari is some sites that use frames, and that is still a rare occurrence. It works with my bank, my school, and the casual browsing that I do. When a problem does arise, however, I do go first to IE.

Though if IE is even on the next OS release, it will be the first thing to go.

It prob. will for those "switchers" but not in the dock, unless Apple puts it alongside Safari.

I am actually not even going to bother with it. Safari works with my bank and all the sites I go to so I am all set, oh, and yeah, it's still just a beta.

Yeah, I downloaded it just to give it a try (and wanting to keep all my apps current), but I haven't loaded IE in so long that when I did --- boy----was it S L O W.

The first site I went to had a pop-up that Safari blocks. That one pop-up and the total SLOWness was enough.

Yeah, that's one problem I noticed. I made a very simple website with a left menu and main frame and one page linked from the left menu consistently doesn't load, until I try to access it the second time. Works fine in Camino and IE.

Anybody know if this incorporates the CSS-fixes that currently makes MSN 2.0 the MOST STANDARDS-COMPLIANT browser on the mac ??

I suppose it depends on where you live. Sh*ts and grins seems to be the way people phrase it around here. I guess it doesn't really matter in this context though, because I did neither after trying out 5.2.3.

G'day,

I downloaded 5.2.3 last night. I repaired permissions before installation. Installed it, and then repaired permissions again. During the first repair of Permissions, there was only a very short list of things repaired. During the second repair of permissions I got literally pages and pages of permissions that were repaired. It went on and on, all to do with IE.

Finished doing whatever I was doing, and went to shut the PM down. It refused to shut down, the beach ball just kept spinning and spinning.

This had never happened before.

Force quit wouldn't help. I was able to run any apps I wanted, but when I went back to shut it down, it refused to do so.

Finally I just shut the power off on the surge protector and re-booted while resetting the power management unit Apple-Option-P-R during start up. Also, just to cover all bases, repaired permissions by booting off the OSX CD and accessing Disk Utilities from the OSX Installer.

Everything worked fine once I made it back to the desktop and I was able to shut down the PM like normal.

Perhaps the Shut Down issue and the download of IE 5.2.3 was just coincidence. But I found the really really long list of repaired permissions after installation to be suspicious.

I'll see how it goes, hopefully the Shut Down issue will not return!
