It's not exactly new, is it? They've been shipping it with FCP4 already.

I thought the interface looked familiar.

An interesting thing about the interface is that it looks like it can now be multi-paned inside a single window:

This is not the first new audio application that I wanted to see out of Apple/Emagic. I really want to see a rebranded version of Logic "for the rest of us." Basicaly something that competes with Free Pro Tools (which unfortunately does not exist in OS X). I hate booting into 9 just to be able to record and if I get a new Mac I won't even be able to do that.

I feel like Pro Tools has the most powerful interface out of any of the audio suites but its so ugly. I think Logic looks slicker but the interface is very cluttered and many important features (like bounce to disk) are hard to find. I think that if Apple released an iLogic or iTracks as a free or cheap ($50) application, every aspiring musician in the world would use it since it would beat the pants off anything else in that price range.

I can dream....

Yes an iTraks would be nice. Soundtracks is a good start. Apple should start to meld these disparate apps into a nice "Pro Digital Hub" concept. Soundtrack incidentally was not programmed by Emagic. It was done in house by Apples kick azz collection of audio programmers. I expect great things to happen concerning Apple and Audio. Soundtrack is only the start. Logic 7 should be a barn burner.

BTW I like that Soundtrack/DVDSP 2.0 Interface. The If the UI is as functional as it looks Apple's onto something here.

can you record your own music in soundtrack using a mic and build original songs with your own mixes combined with the built in loops?

I'm not sure about live micing, but you can certainly use your own loops.

The app is pretty fun, and I bet it will gain a small cult following after people get a chance to play with it. It's pretty fun.

I've been using it for about 3 months now, and I don't see any way to record audio from within the program, but once you have a loop you want to use in it you can import it in the soundtrack loop editor and add all the metadata (bpms, key, instrument, etc.)

There was a recent tutorial on www.creativemac.com that might be of some help.

I'd really like to try out Sound Track, I've been considering dabbling in sound for a while, perhaps I will some day... but by the time I have the cash to justify purchasing more software it'll probably be at least on version 3

soundtrack won't work on a G3? That figures... has anyone tried any audio engineering programs that would do well on an ibook? Maybe Reason 2.0 for example.

Does anybody know how to modify Soundtrack to run on a 450mhz G4? The application won't startup because it claims it requires a 500mhz G4.

"claims" is a loaded word. If the program won't run on anything less than a 500 MHz G4, then it does indeed require one, and I'm not sure why you bought it.

Quality of Performance may be the limiting determinant in setting the spec

- but that is often an individual judgement

Maybe the following will allow you to assess that for yourself

1. Show package content of Soundtrack
2. Open the folder "Contents"
3. Open Info.plist (with TextEditor)
4. Change AELMinimumCPUSpeedDual and AELMinimumCPUSpeedSingle to 400 or so

hth

- be stirred but never shaken -

Just curious for those who have mentioned buying Soundtrack...are you referring to the version boxed with FCP 4 or the stand-alone version? If you bought the stand-alone version where did you find it?

I haven't found a way to do this. Whenever I go to import an audio file it is greyed out. Must it be certain format file? Is it possible to import, say a Bjork song, and use Sountrack to cut it up and loop it, and add beats & mixes like in Acid?
