I was at the Apple Store in Chicago (nice!), and the genius there was trying to sell me a copy of .mac. On the train ride home, I started wondering what was in that box. Is there a CD with a CD-key in there? Or something else?

Don't know if they are different, but when i got my .Mac box last year, all there was inside of it was a little piece of paper touting the advantages of .mac, kinda like the one inside the AppleCare box...just it's about .mac....not AppleCare...

I don't know for sure, but I think it could be a serial/key/code that can be redeemed online to activate full .mac membership. Like a coupon code.

For instance when I was paying for my .mac membership online via credit card, there was a point at the beginning where I could enter some code instead of completing the CC purchase flow.

I'm just guessing btw.

And there isn't a number inside to call Apple in case something breaks, ooohhh and no TechTool Pro 3 for Mac OS 9 either ;-)

Basically you get eh keycode and then a CD-ROM with the Virex software and the other Apple-branded utilities (i.e. iDisk Utility, Back-up, etc...) BUT if you are looking to get a copy get it somewhere OTHER than Apple and MacCatalogues. I picked mine up at Amazon for $78. That price is MUCH more reasonable than the typical $100.

fyi,
jeremy
