In the privacy settings of AIM/iChat, I have AIM and iChat set up to "Allow only (these) buddies to see I am online"..
in the Windows version of AIM, it is possible to see ALL of my online buddies, whether or not they are included in my "Allow only.." list. Is this possible in the Mac version of AIM or in iChat?

By default you see everyone you added to your list and everybody can see you online. Setting the allow rules is for when you want to prevent people other than the ones you add to see you online.
Or do you mean something else?

it is hard for me to find an easy way to phrase my question.. maybe this is better:
I have my Aim and iChat set up so that only a few people on my buddy list can see me when I am online. The problem is that iChat and AIM for Mac won't list the other people in my buddy list that are online, only the ones that can see me.
example: My buddy list contains Joe, John, Emily, Erin.. All 4 are online right now. If I set it up so only Joe and John can "see me", AIM makes it appear that Emily and Erin are offline, even though they are not.
The Windows version will allow me to know everyone who is online, but it has a "X" (or something) next to the names of buddies who are online, but cannot see me. very useful.
Is that a feature that is available on the Mac version of AIM or in iChat?

I believe you are mistaken.
The red X next to users names means that you have blocked them. That means that they cannot see you and you cannot see them - they will appear offline to you as well.
I don't think theres a feature where you can have someone your buddy list that cannot contact you but you can see them online.

In the ICQ world it was (and still is, but who the heck uses ICQ anymore?) called being invisible. You could specify groups of people that could not see when you were online. There is no feature that I know of in any Mac AIM client that allows for invisibility.

yea.. it DOES exist on the Windows version of AIM, but not in the Mac version as far as I can see.. Yahoo Messenger also has this ability, but as I explained above it is implemented a little differently.
Perhaps AIM for Mac will be updated to include this feature sometime soon. that'd be nice.
