Hi,

I hope someone can help me with this one. I work at an university, and I use different software on a daily basis: Dreamweaver, MS Office, Adobe suit, etc. When I actually read the license agreement the other day, I got a pleasant surprise. It states that I can install all my work software on my home computer (iMac), as long as it's not in use at the same time as my work computer. Excellent!

But this is where it starts to get "tricky". All the software has to be installed from packages sent from the IT dept. - meaning no CD's/DVD's. I have to download them from the net (the packages are stored on a Xserve), and burn it myself. They have agreed to make the packages available in mac format .sit/.toast/.img - whatever I want. But the thing is I have to download these files on my work computer (which is a PC), burn them with Nero, and use the CD to install on my Mac at home.

So my question is this: what kind of format shuld I use for this, to be 100% sure that the files don't get corrupted by their short stay on my work PC?

Hope someone knows the solution to this one. Thanks for taking the time to read it through!

If you can have them bundle the files into a non-cd format (.sit or .dmg would be two good choices), and then burn that file onto an ISO disk (remembering to close the session), then you should be in the free and clear. Remember, you are burning a file onto the disk, not the disk from a file.

The big problem is that PC's don't usually handle burning HFS(+) disks with any grace (it is possible... just not always). So avoid the issue and go with a binary format that takes care of it for you. My choice would be .dmg.

If you have a new version of Nero you can also burn .iso images on CDs. It doesn't matter if these .iso images are hfs/hfs+ CDs. You won't be able to test your burned CDs on the PC, but on the Mac you shouldn't have problems.
