I have a blind iBook and want to transfer everything over to another iBook. I have some questions about Carbon Copy Cloner however.

1) What's the best way to transfer one drive to another? Do I need to use my TiBook to transfer from the old iBook to the new iBook, or can I somehow just use the new iBook to do it?

2) If I do it this way will I lose extra space on the new iBook? The new iBook has a 40 GB drive and the old one has a 30 I believe. I don't want to partition the drive.

3) Will there be any problems? The old iBook is an iBook 600 G3 with Rage Mobility and the new iBook will be an iBook 900 G3. Otherwise the remaining parts are nearly identical. I assume it should work fine, since I booted my TiBook off the old iBook's drive and it ran fine.

1) well, if you can't see what's going on on the old iBook, you'll probably have to use the TiBook as an intermediary, like run CCC on TiBook, and clone old iBook to new iBook.

2) nah, you won't lose the extra space. i've used CCC the same way on my sawtooth, to move my system from a 60GB HD to a 120GB HD.

3) it should work fine, although you might want to look at the video card drivers. i don't know exactly how that works, does panther install all the video card drivers available, or just the ones needed for your hardware setup? because the old iBook and the new iBook have different video cards, right?

A question you should ask is, do you want everything? Or just the Users folder? Why copy a gigabyte or more of redundant information?

If you're looking for an exact copy of the original iBook's install, then you really should format the new iBook. You said you don't want to partition it, and you don't need to by any means, but you should start with a clean slate. In fact, I'd just install a fresh copy of OS X on the new machine and copy your Users folder's contents over.

Of course, since you can't clone to the startup drive you'll have to use the TiBook as the workhorse and have the other two in target disk mode. Does the TiBook have two FW ports?
