I have RevB Imac that came with the 34.K modem 'upgrade' already installed for the 56K V90 modem that's in it, and I can't find ANYWHERE an upgrade driver to get it to work above the 34bps... I have emailed Mac Tech support many times and have yet to recieve an answer! thanks for any help or advice!

Your connection speed will, excluding external factors, depend on the modem script you select. Open the extensions folder, go to Modem Scripts, and select the iMac 56K (I may not have the exact script name correct as I don't use the iMac that often) script. It appears that the script you currently have selected is the one which forces the modem to v34.

The v.34 modem script doesn't work any higher than I think 32,000k. That is its purpose for people having trouble connecting or maintaining a faster connection. I have a rev. A iMac & I had to add v.34 modem script because of connection problems early on. However, I now am able to connect ok at higher speeds using the regular "iMac Internal 56k modem" script. Go to Apple Menu - Control Panels - Modem. In the Modem control panel click on arrows button next to your "iMac Internal v34k modem" & look for the "iMac Internal 56k modem" script & click on it. Connect to the internet & see how stable your connection is at the higher speed. If its not stable you will have to revert to the slower v34 modem script & use it until your internet provider gets its v90 standard act together.

thanks for the replies...I have the Imac 56K modem selected in my modem script and it still only connects at 31 or so bps...

My daughter has a Wintel laptop with a 56K v90 modem that connects to the same server at above 40bps all the time. The server claims it's the phone line, but this obviously can't be true. Does anyone think that I should try reinstalling the modem scripts from the system disk ? thanks again!!!

Ironically, I have started getting more frequent disconnects again with the Internal 56k modem script & returned to using the v.34 script. Although I am now connecting at between 26400 & 28800 (according to Remote Access Status panel). My rev.A iMac doesn't feel any slower on the internet. It is my understanding that the connection speed is only the initial connect speed & goes up or down depending on various factors (line noise etc.). So while I can connect with Internal 56k at around 44000k to 48000k its possible the actual ongoing speed is lower. If on the other hand I connect with Internal v.34 at 26400kto 28800k it is possible the speed goes up (32,000k?). So the actual difference may be only about 8,000k or so (maybe even less). The point is that I can't seem to notice any real speed difference between the two modem scripts. I discussed this matter with a NoWonder tech. advisor a few months ago & he poo pooed the whole 56k modem concept as a marketing scheme & that in reality the alleged faster speeds are baloney because most telephone lines can't handle such high speeds yet. Well, who knows. I am quite happy with the v.34 stability & if there are any real speed differences I don't notice it.
