<gloat>So my new dual 1.25 arrived yesterday</gloat>, and ever since it got here I've been trying to get it to mount my old hard drive as well as my new one.
My old hard drive is a Quantum Fireball Plus AS 40. I can't find the specs sheet for it anywhere on Quantum's site anymore. I've tried following the jumper diagram on the drive to set it to slave, but I can't get it to mount at all.
Could it be a problem with where I'm trying to put it? Or somethign with cable select? Any ideas?
Thanks.

In most drives, to default to slave, remove all the jumpers and try. For Master, it does vary from device to device. Provide the exact model and serial number and I'll see if I can dig anything up. Also make sure that it is plugged in correctly. LOL. I know I have fallen to such obvious errors.

If the other drive is set to cable select, than your computer won't boot. If one is set to master and the other to slave and your computer still doesn't boot, its likely a bad drive. Can anyone think of other factors?

May have to initialize again with Drive Setup, like when you install a new HD? I don't know.

Is the old drive one from a mac? Because if it was from a windows comp and was formated in NTFS (I believe, the NT / 2000 / XP file format) it wont mount, you'd need to initialize the drive to use it.

Thanks for all the help.
The old hard drive is from my G3, formatted HFS+. It's is a 40.0 GB AT Fireball Plus AS. Quantum Part Number QMP40000AS-A.
I'm going to try setting removing the jumper on my old one and making sure the new one is set to master. I'll post the results, but I have to go to work soon, so it might take me a while.
Thanks again,
Phil.

Well, I'm a moron. But I still haven't gotten it to work.
The ribbon in the front part of the tower is where I was plugging in my old hard drive. Upon closer inspection I realized that this ribbon is not actually plugged into the motherboard yet. Oops.
But it's still not mounting. Any other ideas? I'm going to play around some more.

So the stock HD is in the back vertical cage, and this is in the front, horizontal cage?
Set both drives to master. You don't even need to touch your current drive in this config.

Well I really appreciate everyone's help. I realized that the hard drive wasn't even spinning up anymore. I put it back in my G3, but it still didn't work. Now I'm at a loss. I don't know what to do.
My new G4 is stunningly fast, but I would trade having bought it to get my 5 years of files back. Does anyone have any tricks to resurrect a dead drive? I just called to get an estimate for recovery, and it was $575 - $1900. I'm a student, I just spent all my savings on a new system, I can't afford to pay thousands more to get my work back.
I may post this to some other forums if I get more desperate.
Thanks again for all the help.
Phil.

I would suggest going down to the CS Dept and see if someone can resurrect it. They probably have the tools and might do it pretty cheaply.
