Remember in the good old days before dual layer technology existed and movies were sometimes split onto a Side A and a Side B of a DVD? Some examples are original releases of Goodfellas, Doctor Zhivago, and Gone With The Wind. (On a side note, I actually screwed up the very first time I watched Goodfellas... I put the DVD in upside down, went to do something else quick, came back, sat down, and watched what I thought was a really short movie for being one of best all time. I was really ticked when I saw the credits roll.)

Anyway, my question is, why can my $100 nine-year-old living room stand alone DVD player play side B, but my $2500 one-year-old Apple G5 Single 1.8 Ghz with SuperDrive can not? Side A plays fine. Anyone else ever heard of this?

LOL. Hilarious! Thanks for the good laugh.

I have no idea. My SuperDrive plays both sides of my double-sided DVDs fine. If the DVD drive plays side A OK I guess the drive is fine. Is side B damaged? Scratches, dirt? My SuperDrive is slightly more picky when it comes to such things as stand-alone DVD players. Have you tried other double-sided DVDs yet? Or are you only having trouble with one DVD?

I've tried it with just two DVD's so far (Gone with the Wind and Doctor Zhivago). Double sided DVD's are fairly rare nowadays. But it could be scratches - they are rentals after all. However, it seems odd Side A would always work but B wouldn't. And like I said, they do play (both sides) in my living room DVD Player - just not in the Super Drive.

The good news through all of this is that I think all of these movies have been done with a dual layer format - Goodfellas just recently. But there are still many movies that have widescreen on one side and full screen on the other. Thankfully, movie people were smart enough to put widescreen on Side A.

Any other thoughts, let me know, otherwise, I'll keep trying.

LOL! What a funny story. Thanks!
I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous.
