I've got a Sawtooth G4 with a Sonnet G4 1GHz. WIth the original CPU, you could touch the heatsink and it was barely even warm. With the 1GHz, it's almost too hot to touch when I shut down the computer and feel it. I need to add a cooling fan (or maybe a whole new cooling solution) to the system to allow myself to sleep better at night. What suggestions do you fine folks have?

if you wanna get really crazy with it, you could get one of these:
http://www.koolance.com/shop/product...products_id=88

some guy modified it to work with a G4, so it's possible. The only thing you have to customize is the heatsink since it is made for intel/amd.

I added a PCI slot fan but didn't notice much of a change, its blowing hot air so it is doing something, just didn't register much change in CPU temp.

Oh, yes..I'm familiar with Koolance. I've got an AMD64 rig that I was looking at going H2O with and elected not to because of the cost. All I'm looking for is to see if someone's found a good way to mount like a 60mm fan to the side of the heat sink...I'm out of ideas how it'd actually be attached.

This is why I had recommended that most people avoid Sonnet. They were too cheap to include a new heatsink and fan for their upgrades, forcing you to use the inadequate Apple OEM heatsink.

Yeah, I can see why. That's also part of why I'd like to sell it and pick up somehing faster, like a Gigadesigns 1.5 or a dually of some sort.

ADDA and Panflo makes some nice quite fans, I would get one that is as big as you can fit on it

That'd be great for my old system, but the Sawtooth's CPU cards are much bigger...thanks for the link, though.

If your CPU card is like my G4/400 Sawtooth card then you do not have that much more space for a bigger fan! Even if the heatsink is about 100x100 mm (thats 4 by 4 inches imperial units) more than half of the fins are cut of so there is far less than that to attach a fan to....

Yeah, that's what I've noticed. I'm investigating using a rubber band to hold a 60mm fan on. Some fan is better than nothing.
