Bootable software RAID?

Is it possible to create a bootable software RAID, using Apple's Disk Utility in Panther? I would like to create a mirroring RAID of a boot drive for a server (possibly a PowerMac or Xserve) and I am having trouble finding information about this. Ideally it would be a RAID level 5 configuration, but Disk Utility doesn't support that.

Does anyone know if this is possible? If not, how expensive are internal hardware RAID solutions? Thanks

You can boot off Apples SW raid, it was very slow on my system though, 2xg4 and 8mb 7200 IDE drives and a sonnet pci ide card, plus I tried to recover the RAID 1 once and I couldn't get it to work.

What level RAID were you using? Also, how would I set this up. Does this process work:

If i boot off an install disc, and set up the RAID in Disk Utility, will the installer see the new RAIDed drives and allow me to install the OS onto them?

Is this how Apple ships the Xserves? Or do they not offer the option for this? I am interested in OS X server but mirrored RAID (or preferably something like RAID 5 would be even better) is required.

I know the xserve has an option for a hardware RAID for the three drives. I set up a RAID 1 in disk utility and then installed the os.

Looks like this is related topic to my plan so I'll post here.

I'm planning a new G5 dual and need some input on whether or not this is feasable:

I wanted to stuff 2x 250GB 7200 drives into the internal bays and run is as a non-mirror RAID. Can I make it a bootable array? How much of a "speed bump" can I expect?

Thanks!

a slight boost in performance, and double the chance for losing your data...
