I've been having thermal runaway problems just about once a day. The thing is, it happens mainly when the computer is idle, and not under stress.

I've checked the system temperatures using Hardware Monitor (got it from VersionTracker), and everything seems to be running just fine, with temperatures being well under the threshold of the system. The thing is, Hardware Monitor fails to show all of the information about my computer. The message states:

"Sensors with a warning label are fully supported by the application, but it is not recommended to display their readings with the current operating system version. The system could crash because defective drivers are installed. The unlocked version of Hardware Monitor lets you choose if you want to use the defective drivers or not."

So it doesn't seem like I have a hardware problem. The system passes all of the hardware tests Apple includes with the computer, and it even passed an "extended test" that Apple conducted. I was wondering if this is truly a software issue, and that if my sleep problems (Thermal Runaway) can be solved by reinstalling the drivers properly. And if you can reinstall the drivers, how would I go about doing that?

Or could it be possible that it sometimes runs too cold? here are the current temperatures, even though I think they're fine:

Drive Bay - 24.5 C
Main Logic Board Backside - 41.9 C
Memory Controller Heatsink - 58.0 C
Maini Logic Board Ambient - 27.2 C
Main Logic Board Air Inlet - 19.9 C
Processor Card A Ambient - 47.8 C
Processor Card B Ambient - 41.5 C
SMART Disk Maxtor - 39.0 C
CPU A Die Temperature - 64.4 C
CPU B Die Temperature - 49.9 C

This is actually my computer running doing day-to-day applications in my room, which is actually somewhat warmer now than it usually is. I'm sure these temperatures have gotten lower before.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

System:
Dual 1.8 GHz PowerMac G5, 1GB RAM, ATi Radeon 9600XT, 250GB HD, Mac OS X 10.3.7 with the firmware update.

Sorry to hear about your thermal runaway issue. Now your CPU A Die temperature of 64C sounds a bit high to me. It may be that your sensors are not calibrated properly, and that's only something an Apple technician can remedy. Perhaps you should run the Apple Hardware Test CD. I assume that when you say thermal runaway, you mean the fans are revved high and the system has crashed. One check you can make is to ensure that your plastic airflow cover is on correctly. If you continue experiencing such problems definitely take it in for service.
