I don't know whether my problem is unique or whether others are experiencing a similar problem.

This problem first came apparent a few weeks after I received my new 17" PB in April. I wanted to show off it's beautiful screen to my colleagues @ work. So, I wake it from sleep that day and suddenly the screen looks real weird. That is, the colors appear posterized and the edges of images are shimmering. The image looked more like a "needlepoint" picture. I tried restarting a few times and each time the gray screen would come up the apple would look fuzzy, the lines on the "clock" would be fuzzy and the inside of gray apple would look snowy. Then, when the desktop image would come up, it would again appear posterized and shimmering etc... I called AppleCare that day and they did not have any answers. They were convinced this was a software issue and they wanted me to try booting up from my restore disc, but it was home. Then, miraculously when I went to pack up my laptop to go home and I closed the lid and then reopened it I noticed the image returned to normal. That was in April and it worked flawlessly everyday since, until two days ago. That day, I wake my laptop up @ work and again the poserized and fuzzy and shimmering image. Then, it gets worse. There is a red ghost image trailing all the text and images. Then, I also notice that the screen starts blacking out periodically. Then, I was about to give a presentation and I go to wake up the computer and the screen is flashing black with just a sliver of an image on the edge. The screen keeps flashing black. After restarting a few times and playing with screen, I finally get an image but not great (fuzzy and posterized). Funny, I am able to give my presentation via the LCD projector OK, although my laptop screen still looks weird. Then, it goes back to normal later that day. Other times the screen starts blacking out. Now, it is perfect again.

When, the images starts acting up, I can sometimes improve it by moving the screen up and down and playing with it a little. I strongly suspect this is a hardware problem. Perhaps a problem with the inverter board ??? Funny how intermittent it is. Problem is, I have to give two more important presentations in the next week and I really want my powerbook. However, I suspect it is time to call Apple again for a shipping box ????

... seems like the display hinge is pinching some video cable going through it, or something like that.

I just got it fixed for my iBook (yesterday). Take it in to the Apple store. They would know what to do immediately.

Hardware problem. Like you mentioned inverter board, or video cable most likely.

Wouldn't it be great if Apple gave us loaners....sigh...
