My fans just won't stop spinning after upgrading the system!
When playing Quake, great. The new top speed is really much more effective than before. I can play Q3 with the computer on my lap without burning myself. An improvement.
BUT, now the fan is on even at low temperatures! I GOT this machine 'cause I've begun to HATE computer fan noise. Even with ONLY FINDER running, processor activity below 10%, the fans are on. Temp monitor says 49°C -- that's low, right? So why are the fans on?!
Anyone having the same problem?
Anyone got a solution?
Very grateful for any feedback on this.

Hmmmmm... So, my computer's gotten a lot *hotter* since after the upgrade? 'Cause the fan would *only* go on when I did something intensive with the computer, before.
Did I mess my system up, or is someone else having the same problem?
(thanks for the quick reply btw, uv23)

There's a lengthy thread over at the Apple Discussion areas. It apparently only affects first generation 12" PowerBook G4s. It has been suggested (and I agree) that it's actually a feature to try to get the PB to run cooler. The "solutions" appear to be:
1. Wait for Apple to fix it (if it is indeed broken in Apple's eyes).
2. Run at the "reduced" processor setting.
3. Downgrade a system extension to the 10.3.1 version. The particular extension affected is /System/Library/Extensions/AppleADT746x.kext.

Woah! Thanks a lot! That's *exactly* what I was looking for! And so *quick*! TheBum, I owe you one! :D
(if anyone takes a look in this thread -- the solution to the problem is located at http://www.deleet.de/ray/pbfanfix.html )

iDriveX just put together a one-click fix installer.
Edit: Linky
http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.p...75#post1755275
works absolutely fine, does exactly what the link above says to, except without any hassle.
All that's needed is to zap the PRAM after installation.
