G4 Powerbook vs G4 Desktop

I am considering replacing my G4 533 Dual 640/140/ATI Radeon 9000 with a New G4 Powerbook. I don't want to lose speed though. Given how much newer the powerbook is, will it be faster than an older dual, even with the slower drives, etc?

In some benchmark tests even the Ti-800 was faster than the Power Mac Dual 800. Don't ask how but several publications did benchmarks and the results were so.
If you get any of the current PBs they'll kick your Dual 533s ass. But do the speed justice and get a nice big screen, like the 17 inch.

If I get one, i'll get one with the smaller screen. Perhaps even the 12". I use the portability a lot. And when I plug it in, I've got a 20" cinema display for all the stuff that needs lots of screen space.

7200 RPM vs 4200 RPM. On the surface it sounds slower. I don't know how much differnce it makes.

Depends on how often you access information from the drive. Most "normal" software runs and doesn't need much from the disk any longer.

As always, it depends on what kind of work you do. Generally, the newer laptops, especially the 17" and the 1.25GHz 15", will be significantly faster than your "old" G4.
Hard drive speed is a factor though - check out barefeats.com for a comparison of stock and optional PB hard drives - a custom 7200rpm drive will be approx. 30% faster than a slow 4200rpm drive. On barefeats you'll also find a comparison between the G4 PB's and the latest G4 desktops. To complete the picture you should also check out the speed tests on AccelerateYourMac, and I would recommend burning a few documents onto a CD-ROM, taking the CD to your local Mac dealer and simply trying out the PB there for 10 minutes using the kind of docs you usually work on.
