Does anyone go on trails around here?

It looks like Earthscape Basic is a really good start, and Geopher is definitely a decent great geocaching tool. But is there a current or promising application on the iPhone that will provide online and offline navigation, waypoints, altitudes and the like?

No, I will not buy a dedicated GPS unit. Just want to pull out the iPhone "just in case". Can usually navigate by stars and landmarks, no problem.

Thanks.

EDIT: Sorry, didn't mean to sound rude. You probably don't want this thread to talk about whether or not you take a iPhone hiking.

Yes, there are. Track Me does what you're asking for, so does GPS Tracker.

Both applications work with satellite position only, meaning they don't need a cell connection to work. If you do have a data connection then they will both upload your current position to a web server where friends or emergency personnel can track your whereabouts. Keep in mind that these apps are not a replacement for google maps, where you DO need data connectivity for results.

I've used GPS Tracker in Northern Ontario and found it extremely useful.

Actually, I used http://www.instamapper.com/ today and was pleased with it.

It updates your location on a website, so you can track your hikes, or allows family and friends to locate you if you don't report in.

It's also great for geotagging photography.

Started using GPS Kit. Really nice.

Wish there was a way to customize the interface; the um, Courier font is not to my liking.

More importantly, the topographical view, while excellent has two flaws:
1) no offline support (say, a few square miles of land for future use)
2) no zoom

Oh well, great for walking around lunchtime I suppose.

TrailGuru is pretty nice and worth a look. It's free and you can view your hike on Google maps.
