What's the trick I'm missing?

I can get it to work about once in every ten tries.

I've had increasingly bad performance in Safari with YouTube videos. But you didn't say which browser...

Yup. Safari.

Everything else works fine, it's the scrubbing which is up to the whims of John Appleseed.

Wait, are you talking about on a computer or on an iDevice (this forum)? Since you're talking about scrubbing in Youtube in Safari, I presume you mean on a Mac, which means this thread should be moved. Can you confirm?

And I know the story of Johnny Appleseed, but I have no idea why you're referencing him about this.

John Appleseed is the fake name Apple uses in their demos:

Late '90s early '00s you could scrub a video however you wanted (Quicktime) on the Mac
It's unbelievable that Quicktime didn't become the standard

Anyway the scrubbing on iOS is a little flawed but high speed scrubbing (jumping more like) is the default and if you want some precision just start to scrub then drag your finger towards the bottom where much gentler scrubbing is possible

I usually get to YouTube via Safari, or watch something embedded.

I'm talking about an iPhone 4S.

It's not a flaw for me, it's flat out broken.

Nine times out of ten, if I try to do anything with the position bar (press/swipe), nothing happens.
