All extra iPhone batteries I owned died within a year. How do I know this one will last ?

Well, the main issue is that those extra battery packs use cheap Li-ion cells, and cheap charging electronics, which causes the life expectancy to be very low.

I came to the conclusion that the battery packs are not only useless, but also give you a false sense of "security". You think you have a backup, but in the moment of need, the backup battery is empty because it doeasn't hold the charge, or yields minimal extra power.

My conclusion is to rather bring a charger with me whenever I might need extra power, rather than an unreliable backup battery.

One thing about this particular battery is its huge. We're talking a Presidential size stick. A fresh one probably holds two whole phone charges. It'd have to seriously not hold a charge to fail as security.

Also, what I actually need security against is not having a phone because the POS is stuck on a wall socket. The way to do this is to charge it off the Juice Pack long before your phone battery is critical.

If you're looking for emergency power, you may want to look into one of these:

Tekkeon - TekCharge MP1550, emergency power, emergency battery

It can run off of AA alkalines.

I have one, but it was for something which didn't pan out, so I haven't used it yet. I assume it works.

I have looked for one of these that would use AAA batteries, so it would be smaller and more portable.

IIRC, I found one online, but it looked like a crappy product.
