Got a new iPad Air this afternoon. Pretty nifty. But, setting it up was really bittersweet.

You see, since the day the Earth cooled, my Apple ID has simply been my online name...Thorzdad. But, to set-up the iPad, it insisted that my Apple ID must now be an email address. It wouldn't let me continue the setup unless I made this change. I've been aware of this change in policy for several years now, but never ran into any problems since I didn't have an iThing or a Mac capable of using iCloud, and, anyway, I think it's a bit dumb to have an email address as a username/ID.

Anyway, I killed-off my single-name ID and have joined the iCloud crowd today.

This iPad Air is really nice, though.

This whole AppleID thing is a bit of a cluster&*#.

Username, @me.com, @icloud.com...

I hope we're finally at a point where the ID and Email doesn't change anymore.

Congrats and welcome to the collective!

I refuse to use the icloud or me domains, and stick to the .mac legacy... until some shiny feature requires the change, I suppose.

Did you end up with the 16 or 32?

64. wi-fi only.
I didn't think .mac emails existed anymore? I seem to recall my .mac address dying a long time ago.

One thing ran into when I changed my Apple ID to an email address was that I got an error when I tried to use the address I preferred. It said it was already associated with an Apple ID. Apparently, I have another Apple ID floating around out there, but I have no idea when I would have made it. AFAIK, I've only ever had the ancient single-name ID. Weird.

If you had a .mac address, you had an apple ID.

Right. But I could have sworn Apple killed the .mac email service a few years ago. I know mine stopped working.

They just stopped giving out .mac addresses many years ago. The addresses are still active. My [user]@mac.com, [user]@me.com, and [user]@icloud.com mail all gets delivered to my iCloud mail.

Mine still works just fine, and the @mac.com e-mail addresses (I have several aliases) are still my primary addresses. I've also added one or two @me.com aliases in the meantime. Never used @iCloud.com for email at all.

I went the whole migration through iTools —> .mac —> MobileMe —> iCloud, though.

Yeah, I skipped the move to MobileMe because it switched to a subscription service.

exactly. you had to pay for a mobile me account to convert your .mac into a .me address. if you didn't, then your username is lost forever. (which is stupid, as it's still reserved and no one else can use it). I have been trying to reclaim my original .mac username to use with @icloud (because it was firstnamelastname) but they won't let me because I skipped @me.

Since I was working OT on a regular basis, I set aside some money and went for the 128 myself

I still use my mac.com email/username exclusively (obtained back in the iTools days). @me.com was stupid and @icloud.com is just as stupid. Thankfully, all 3 go to the same place.

The same thing with the login happened to me, it must have been when I got my iPad mini set up. I can still log in to the iPad/iPhone app store either as just my username or my email address, one gets me to the recent purchases since I got the iPad, the other has the older apps I got on the iPhone. I still use my mac.com email address, I don't like the me.com or icloud.com either.

I have the horrible feeling that I’m going to have to kill you. I thought you might appreciate a drink first. I know I would.

.mac is where it is at. How else do people know I support Apple?

(I'm actually slightly embarrassed occasionally by the @mac.com address, although that's primarily because I should probably get around to enabling e-mail on my own business domain…)

I'd been paying for .mac already, so it was seamless for me.

Also — just cleaning out my old mailboxes, I realized that I got a free one-year subscription via Apple Sales Training Online back when MobileMe was introduced.

Me/Mac/iCloud too

Damn, that was long ago!

And I connected to the internet with an Apple Geoport Adapter. It was expensive...but when friends wanted to have a faster (or less slower) connection, they had to buy a new modem - I just had to update the Geoport software!
I also was able to make/receive phone calls with the Geoport software - welcome to the 90ies, iOS8 and Yosemite!

I converted my .mac to .me without paying for it. That said I never paid for my .mac. Its one of the very few things Apple ever gave me for free.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

hi

i have a user@mac.com mail address.

i can send a test mail to user@icloud.com and i receive it. so i know its active and working
but i would like to start to send mail using the user@icloud.com mail address.
how do i do it? i tried in mac mail to set it up but defaults to user@mac.com

is it impossible to have both mac@com and icloud@com as accounts in mac Mail?

thanks

It's the same account, and will go the same place as you've found. Sign into icloud.com > preferences > composing and you can select which outgoing address you want for default, or in each email you can pull down your email address and select between icloud and mac.

Yep. My primary email is still a .mac account and I love it. Apple aliased all the versions of your .mac email address so whatever you use will still get mail addressed to the other variations.
