1) How scratch resistant is the screen? Can I throw it in my bag and cart it around, or should I worry?
2) Is there a way to move around in large text fields, like arrow keys? Sometimes when responding to a forum post I need to scroll to the bottom of a text field which has run off the bottom of the text entry box, and I can't figure out how to do it.

1) Buy a skin.
2) Not too conveniently, at this point. There's a bubble type of thing that appears if you hold your finger and drag slowly over text, but it's not very precise. Virtual, on demand arrow keys would make more sense.

I carry around mine in my coat pocket or bag all the time, and, although the shiny back gets scuffed up, the front doesn't seem to be effected. (Or is it 'affected?')

Ditto. I'm pretty rough on my touch by this forum's standards. Meaning it goes into my pockets with my vw switchblade key, my gerber, my wallet, etc... and it seems to survive just fine.

Backups are like guns and condoms. It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
