I am a detective in Shelby County/Memphis and I went out today and located 10 potentially stolen I-Pods. I have already verified 1 as being stolen and will be reuniting the owner with it very soon. Now I only have 250 more to go.

My best advice for recovering a stolen I-Pod would be a few things:
First, and most important, NAME YOUR IPOD. When I say name your I-Pod that does not mean "jammer32." I can do nothing with a user name like this. The best things that you can name your I-Pod is your real name, "mickeykeaton"; you driver's license number with state, " TNDL10104647"; or even your phone number with area code "9013339999." All of these user names would be unique to you and easy for the police to locate, thus upping your chance of getting your I-Pod back.

I understand that you can get the email address after connecting to I-tunes and selecting song info, and that is helpful, but not everyone downloads their songs from itunes.com.

So help the police help you by adding your information to the device. Name the device something the police can track back to you. Load some contacts, have your name engraved on the back, anything unique to you.

Once my department, The Shelby County Sheriff's Office, gets some solid results we will be sending the information nationwide to other departments to assist them in recovering these devices. This also goes for other electronic devices such as home and lap top computers, X-boxes and playstation, GPS units, Satellite radios, and any other electronic devices.

I hope this was helpful....

you need to report the theft to the agency that the theft occured within. Make sure to give them the serial numbers for that I-pod. I would dare to say that most of these stolen i-pods end up in pawn shops, which police have full access to their records. So by you having the serial number that upps your chances of getting it back...but make sure to report it!
