If this is true:

then by summer there should be available in Italy the new 3G iPhones, UNLOCKED.
As it happens, I will be going there in a few weeks. If anyone wants one, submit a private message to me. I plan on picking up at least 5 for resale in US.
I do not know the price because nobody knows what Apple will charge for unlocked Italian iPhones. I cannot make any guarantees how it would work in the US. And of course there is the crappy $ to € exchange rate, currently around $1.55=€1.
But, if you're interested, let me know privately and I'll share details as we know more.
