Just read a nice article on the web about alterations on the iPod Touch.

Software to dial in on W-Lan networks and use the iPod Touch as an internet telephone. A plug-in microphone.

Anybody heard of this - or done it yet?

I honestly don't see why it couldn't be done via skype or something of the likes. It has an active internet connection. the only thing that might stop it from working right away is some ports might be blocked, but i'm sure there is some program to install if you jailbreak it.

I've been waiting on something like this to come up. I don't have one, i have an iPhone (i didn't see the purpose of buying a touch when i can get the iPhone that has a phone; unlock it; and you have the touch with a phone.

From what I have read we should be getting Skype soon after the SDK goes public. Attach an iPhone headphone (or any other compatible headphone with mic) to your touch and you should be good to go.

Hmmm, if it could work in theory with the ipod touch wouldn't it also work on the iphone? What I'm thinking is getting the very basic cheapo iphone plan. Since most of my calls would be at home one could use skype while in the vicinity of wifi and only use the minutes included in the phone plan when outside. Does anyone do this now? If not, Apple/AT&T must have thought of this and probably has already taken steps to prevent it.

That would be pretty cool if it worked well.

Tried googling for this article. Would you be able to provide a link to where you read this "iPod Touch alteration"?
