Hello, I am a new person to Apple products, and I have an Apple TV operating wirelessly via my wireless network in my daughters room (upstairs). My computer id downstairs and itunes will show NO TRACE of the apple tv.
First, my equipment and software I am using:
Vista 32 bit with Norton Antivirus PC
Linksys BRAND NEW Roouter with WEP 128 encryption
Cable modem from Comcast cable
Itunes 8.0
(All computers are connected to the internet via a wireless
connection)
Apple TV - latest software as of 9/11/2008
Now some points:
- APPLE TV is connected perfectly to my network. Good speed, am able to watch movie trailers, get to the Itunes store, etc.
- APPLE TV is updated with latest software
- All settings look perfect.
I have tried everything in troubleshooting from rebooting, removing the firewall on both Windows and Norton as well as all security, had dropped my encryption at one point and re-synched the network - still nothing - reinstalled Itunes on my PC - still nothing. Reset Router, Internet connction nothing.
I even de-activated the start up items (except for what apple uses - still nothing).
Finally, I took my PC laptop and installed Itunes on that and was able to see the apple tv. I quickly disqualified that laptop from itunes and went back to the PC and still nothing.
This has to be something to do with Vista, but I can't figure out what. Anyone have any other ideas that may help?

Welcome to the fun world of the Apple TV (also known as Steve's hobby).
You seem to have done your homework and tried just about everything I would suggest. I can only think of 2 things you haven't tried.
1. Reset Apple TV to factory settings. (that has worked for me in the past when iTunes refuses to see my Apple TV)
2. Forego wireless and try hooking up everything wired just to see if it will work.

itunes preferences, check look for appletv.
itunes, store menu, deauthorize and reauthorize computer. I know, makes no sense if you aren't buying, but you need it to find the device and ask you to enter the 5 or 6 numbers to pair it.

Not sure I totally understand your setup, but you MUST be on the same wireless network with both ATV and your Computer you wish to use with it.
Did your laptop use your upstairs wireless connection, whereas your downstairs computer uses a different internet connection? If so, that is prolly ur problem. GL.

- For vmarks - I checked that , those preferences are fine. I did deauthorize and authorize several times as well.
For Wolf: Nothing complicated. My downstairs computer is my wireless PC. The Laptop is wireless. The apple tv is upstairs in my daughters room connected wirelessly to the one and only network I have. Anybody have any other ideas? It has to be a vista problem, because my XP laptop (itunes) was able to find the apple tv when I installed it.

Side note: WEP is old and utterly broken. Use WPA instead.
