Help!

I haven't been on these boards for a while but have returned in search of helpful advice.

I own what I think is a 3rd gen 20gb iPod - the one with 4 buttons under the display. My Apple system is a 10gb 366mhz G3 ibook & up until recently I had my iTunes music library stored on an external firewire hard drive.

Long story short, I want to use my iPod with my Linux desktop & some of teh great apps I have on it. To do this the iPod needs to be of a fat filesystem rather than hfs+ This is where I ran into to problems. I formatted the iPod using Disk Utility in os X to a fat filesystem hopeing that when I plugged it into my XP box (with iTunes & iPod updater) it would be recognised & set up. - No joy

How on earth do I format my Apple ipod for use with a Windows machine? (and get windows to see it / set it up?)

just download the iPod update utility and reformat with that. The great news is that your Mac will still be able to recognize your iPod one formatted for Windows.

Er how? I know this isn't really the place to be asking Windows questions but it's just so alien to me. Linux is a breeze to use, Apple Mac is a breeze to use, Windows just seems to want to make everything awkward.

I plug the iPOd in, Windows makes a noise but I can't see the device. I run the update utility but that can't see it either :/

That's right - I have an iBook but it just doesn't have the hard drive space for my iTunes libary. I did have that on an external drive but that just craps out every 36 or so hours.

Windows doesn't seem to register my Ipod. XP just makes no sense to me. I'm goign to format my linux box & intall Windows & iTunes & iPod updater on that incase it was a hardware problem on the other beige box.

I thin kthe problem might have been formatting teh iPod to fat32 with os X's Disk Utility.

I formatted it back to hfs+ & set it up fo ruse with my iBook again. Then I reinstalled Windows XP on my Linux box & tried again - everthing worked this time.

So the problem was either the firewire card in the first PC or formatting teh iPod under osX
