Greetings:
I just got a Fantom 120gb external drive(very nice by the way) I want to keep all of my music on it and just occasionally transfer song from the Fantom to my ipod. This will work, however, once on my ipod they won't play, or even register on the ipod, the music just takes up space.
Is there anyway I can tranfer music from my external drive to my ipod without having to put the music on itunes first? I don't want to put it on itunes because then I have to tranfer it twice. Also, how can I name the that don't register on itunes?
thanks for the help

No way, Jose. You'll need a third party app. There are other apps than iTunes, but you can't do it without any software.

I am going to keep all my music on my external drive, the problem is when I want to get music onto my ipod from the external it won't register unless I go through the itunes application. Even when I put the itunes application on my external it still has to be copied over to my computers hardrive. If I just click and drag music from my external to my ipod, it will go on but won't register or play, just takes up space.
My other quesiton was how do I name songs that don't show up in itunes, they simply have the track number and song times.

Ok, you guys must be confusing something.
1) YOU NEED iTunes. No way around. Stop looking for another things.
You can NOT just copy music drag'n'drop to the iPod.
2) In iTunes, preferences, you have to set the folder where all your music is kept. Point it to your external drive.
3) Syncing shouldn't be a problem now.

What do you mean with "they don't show up in iTunes" ?
If they have no name, artist and album name, they will be at the very bottom of the list.
Select it an hit Apple + i, then you can enter all the information. You can select more than one song at a time and do batch changes.

Thanks:
I just uploaded all my music to my external hardrive and wanted to be able to play it without having to bring it over from my external to my internal hardrive. Didn't think to look in the advanced section of preferences. Just got it working! AHHH all my music in one spot, sooo nice, Thanks again.
