Why do you need a copy of the iPod's OS if you had "accidentally thrown" your iPod into the water?

Anyway, to format it, you need to use Apple's iPod Updater application.

Yeah, just use the iPod application. it should be in Start>All Programs>iPod. Click on restore (that will wipe all your music and files on the iPod), but will restore the OS and all factory settings. I think if you wanted to get the OS out all by itself that'd take a lot of hacking, and I highly doubt that would be worth your time and effort. Just click 'restore' and wait a couple of minutes.

Just to me it either sounds like your technician doesn't know exactly what he's talking about, or he didn't explain things very well. Oh well. That's what MacNN is for!

Everyone that has answered your question thus far is correct. You don't need the iPod OS. What you need is to restore and update it.

You're welcome alot!

Go to apple.com and download the latest software updater. This will reformat your iPod (if it works) for either Windows or Mac.

If that doesn't work, I could suggest something on the Mac side that might work but not sure of the Windows equivalent.

If that fails, either take the iPod in for repairs, or start shopping for a new one.

That technician is a moron.

The iPod OS is on a chip inside the iPod. If the iPod still works, then all you need is the iPod software to reformat it (like folks said before).

You data is lost. You could go and pay thousands of dollars to get the HD restored. It's not worth it. You should have all the music at home on your computer, unless you pirated it from someone else...

Hey Randman, can you suggest that thing to do with the mac side? I have a 3rd Gen 30Gb and dropped it while jogging. It slid a little along the wet road. I had a few good connections and the software restore seemed to finish but it couldn't restart, not completely. I get a preloader type bar and the bar fills to about 99% then it starts again.
I'm hoping the special thing to do on the mac you are talking about is like a boot up thing. kinda like holding down c when booting from CDs.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

If you have DiskWarrior, you can try using that. Or reformat it with Disk Utility then try to reformat using the iPod Software Updater/Restorer.

He's probably an Electrician, and the guy got confused. Seems plausible with this fellow...
