i have a nice speaker system at home and most of my audio comes from good sources including cds. so when i import them to my hard drive, i try to retain some of the quality and my compression is minimal. the result is a large file size.

now that i have an ipod, i'd like to recompress whatever i import to something more manageable. any advice on how to do this?

thanks!

Apple Lossless will cut the uncompressed song roughly in half. As the name says, it's totally lossless.

problem is a lot of my songs are mp3 or aac at 320 kbps resulting in a 4 min song at 8MB a file. i'd like to drop them to about 128 when copying over the the ipod. is this at all possible? some kinda script or tool?

i hope apple thought of this, but i'm guessing i'm the only who needs it.

The iPod shuffle can do that automatically. Check out http://www.dougscripts.com for some AppleScripts for other iPods.
