Personalized two 4gb nanos for order placed on Tuesday morning, just received email that they have been picked up in China by FEDEX and are in transit.

I'm impressed that Apple's got this product ramped up so quickly and that the personalization on my and my wife's (surprise) black nanos took only a day.

This at long last is the iPod that I always wanted, one impervious to skipping during my runs, and with a terrific battery life. The color screen is just icing on the cake.

Personalized? I imagine anyone lucky enough to place an order for a basic model in stock at a mail order place would be able to opt for overnight service. I'm psyched over Apple's underpromise-overdeliver approach to this particular product. The norm for Apple has been:

1. Thrilling product announcement and enticing demo
2. Preoders accepted for product to be available in a month
3. Build to Order configurations filled and delivered in 2 months

My expectations were low based on PowerMac ordering experience, I suppose. Psyched to see Apple way ahead of the curve this time.

Eh, different experience for those of us in Silicon Valley trying to buy one at a local store. I'd rather not get it online for a bunch of reasons, but the stores here have been habitually sold out. If you don't call during the right 90 minute window, you're SOL. I've called more than once a day to the Apple Store that's just a block down the street from where I work, and while they have gotten a couple shipments in, my timing has been off every single time. I've also walked in three times (including right after the announcement and the day after).

Too much disposable income in this area, I think!

Yes it was personalized. Apple stocked up on the Nanos ahead of time "betting on strong demand" since their previously was so many backorder issues.

Yeah, I do agree, the norm for Apple is to talk on stage about barely-exciting-enough updates, then not make them available until they are already old technology 3 months later...

agreed, living in this "bracket" ;-) usually you are SOL, I think Apple stocked more Nanos than previous iPods however it's still difficult to get them. Knowing that instant gradification would be nearly impossible I just said "f-it" and ordered online. Although some "associate" in my office walked into the store and purchased 20 of then at once.. he said he hurried because he was getting evil looks.

That's really wrong of him/her. Apple Stores should limit sales to something like 2 per person, especially early on. The scalping on Craigslist is really obscene. It's one thing if you find a really great deal on something, and then order it and sell it to make a little profit. I don't have a problem with that. But when you dry up the supply to create an artificial deficit, and then you jack up the price, that's something else entirely.

Incredible. My nanos shipped from China on Wednesday, made it to Alaska last night, Indianapolis this morning, and will be delivered to me in NYC on Friday. Fedex rules!

I was wrong. They arrived this morning. That's 2-day shipping from China to NYC for 2 nanos, $12. WOW!!!!

And, yes, it is absolutely beautiful and my concerns about the absence of firewire are addressed. USB2 is plenty quick for a 4gig device.
