I just got a new 60GB color iPod and loaded all my music and Audible.com audiobooks on it. I discovered a problem where if I start up an audiobook on the iPod when it's off and stopped (or when I switch from one audiobook to another), about 7-10 seconds into playback of the audiobook there's a kind of hiccup / pause / glitch / stutter in the audio, and then it will pick up after a fraction of a second to as much as a second and seem to be okay. I took the first iPod back for this problem before I was able to reliably reproduce it and narrow it down to audiobooks. As far as I can tell this doesn't affect my music files, but I haven't experimented long enough to be sure.
I had a lengthy phone consult with Apple. I always download format 4 files from Audible. Apple asked me to try formats 2 and 3. Both formats 2 and 3 worked without glitches. With format 4 I get glitches. Apple asked me to bring this up to Audible while Apple checks this with engineering. Apple has not seen this problem before and they want to know if Audible knows about it or what Audible thinks. So I'm working with them too.
Additional information Audible asked for:
1) This happens with all audiobooks downloaded in format 4. Formats 2 and 3 don't exhibit this behavior on my iPod, but formats 2 and 3 are not acceptable formats for me - the quality is not up to par, so I plan to use format 4 always.
2) My audiobooks play fine in iTunes.
3) My iPod firmware is up to date and I still have this problem.
Anyone else seeing this on a 4G of any size? Apple thinks it might be a buffer problem, but claims they've never seen it. Audible claims they've never seen it. I found some links online where this is discussed, but not much. Any input is appreciated!
