Compilations are albums that have tracks by different artists. You can use the setting to keep all compilations (like movie soundtracks) together.

It's a shortcut to your compilations. For example, 7 World Collide is my favorite live albums. (It's from a concert where the leader singer of my favorite group, Crowded House, performed with people like Johnny Marr of the Smiths, Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam, and a couple of Radiohead members.) Different artists perform different tracks, so I made sure the album is flagged as a compilation in iTunes. When I click "Group compilations when browsing" in the preferences, a heading called "Compilations" is added to the top of the Artists list, so I can easily see this and all my other compilations. It makes it easier than finding them the standard ways. Likewise, if you enable Compilations on your nano, it will show up in the Music screen under "Albums" so you don't have to wade through all of your other albums to find them.

lavar. thanks for the info. wouldn't it be easier to search for the album if you are looking for these artists? i think i'm not yet seeing the benefits of marking it as a compilation. thanks again.

It's another option in addition to search. Some people prefer browsing over searching. It makes browsing for compilations much easier. Also, you can't search on the iPod.
