Current state of affairs:

"Distinctive Apple earphones" = white

This doesn't make a lot of sense to me. The U2 iPod is black, there's a black Nano, iPod minis came in several colours, there are coloured skins and socks for the whole iPod family.

As I see it, it wouldn't hurt Apple to offer earphones in different colours. Can't be that bloody expensive, can it?

What's your take on this?

Apple would go out of business if the headphone weren't white.

Seriously, Apple just wants to stock ONE color of earbuds. Simpler and more cost effective.

If you don't like them, sell them on ebay and go buy yourself some replacements.

That makes a lot of business sense since they don't have to produce everything in house. The third party market will take care of it.

The white earphones are an important part of the brand. When you see white earphones, you immediately think "iPod". It's the signature iPod callout.

I heard that iPods only work with white head phones.

I heard that white headphones prolong battery life.

The white headphones reflect the sunlight removing subliminal messages that the aliens try to insert in your songs.

They are also invisible when worn by the average computer nerd.

How about this: go to a store that sells stereo equipment and buy a pair of Sony earbuds in black! Or get Sony "hook" style earbuds and be a trend setter! For all of $10 or $20 you can be a leader!

Really, if you don't like the Apple earbuds (which aren't at all bad acoustically-for earbuds, anyway) then just buy the style and color you want somewhere else. But keep the earbuds that came with the iPod for a backup.
