As I was syncing my ipod, iTunes 5 froze and since then I cant get my ipod to rework. I have resetted it many times and now all the songs are gone. On certain resets, I get the folder with the exclamation mark. On others, it scans the disk (ie disk with magnifying glass) and fails.

I finally managed to mount it. The iPod Updater after staying the initialization phase for about 20 minutes finished by saying that the updater doesnt support this ipod. If I double click on the iPod icon it takes almost 5 minutes for the folder to open. I also tried to run Disk Utility but it just said "gathering information" and did not get anywhere.

Things are not looking good. Is my iPod dead?

By hardware reset do you mean the usual ipod reset (hold button on, off then press the 2 middle buttons)?
I tried restoring the ipod but the progress bar reaches the first 30% of progress after a couple of hours and then doesnt seem to be able to get any further.
