i plug in my nano to let it charge and sync up when i'm home. my computer auto sleeps if not in use for a while. sometimes I even put it to sleep.
the problem is when it goes to sleep and wakes up, there is a message saying "warning device improperly removed" or something along those lines.
my external hard drive and compact flash cards do not have this problem. is there a fix? seems like a pain to keep on dismounting it.

The nano won't charge when the computer is sleeping. Same as the shuffle.

This is a computer-generated message and needs no signature.

im not worried about it charging. i just get messages saying the device was improperly removed and could have been damaged, when it put it to sleep.

That's because when you're computer goes to sleep your iPod thinks it's been un-plugged, but your computer thinks it should still be in and that it has been taken out without being "properly ejected". you can fix this by having your iPod automatically eject after it up date, these iPod options can be altured in iTunes by going to perferences>iPod (and switching a few check boxes) while the iPod is plugged in.

Do you have disk use enabled (allowing you to copy files over to the nano from the finder)? If so, that might explain what is happening. You should either eject the nano before sleeping or disable disk mode. By the way, I don't think you're going to physically damage your iPod even if you don't eject it before sleeping. Removing a disk while it is in use can lead to corruption of files, but since you are sleeping the computer, there shouldn't be anything using it. Still, it's an annoying message.

yeah, i'm sorry i wasn't specific enough, but like Icruise said you have to DISABLE the disk use, so your i pod automatically ejects after the iPod update has taken place...

yeah i find that strange though. my external hard drive and my complact flash reader are just like the ipod. if i improperly remove them, they give me the same warning.
however, if i put my computer to sleep and wake it up, they don't prompt me and they are fine. i wish the ipod was like that.

Yeah, that is weird, but I guess it's just the way the iPod nano is programed... what can you do...

The way the iPod works it requires that if it's in Disk Mode it be manually dismounted/ejected. When your Mac goes to sleep the iPod's connection is severed; the iPod's software recognizes it was not properly dismounted in that case.

I've never found that to be the case. Unless it only applies to iPods connected by USB?
