Either way it's not great!

My iPod has run out of charge. I lost the power brick a while back and have always charged it through my iBook's FW port. However, today, while it was still working fine as a hard disk, it was no longer recharging itself. I've done a search and other people have complained of FireWire ports that still charge devices but don't recognise them; my problem is the opposite. Has anyone else had this? Is it just what happens to iPods when their batteries finally give up? Or have I got a more complex problem?

Likely just the battery, but it could be more.

What version iPod?

My first generation TiBook 400Mhz had a problem as well. I had an external FW drive that shorted out the FW port. It was a screw-up in Apple engineering's part as there were widespread reports about early model TiBooks that didn't have some kind of fuse to protect it from an electrical backlash of some sort.

I couldn't see any devices connected to the FW port when this happened to my TiBook.

Luckily I had the TiBook under warranty. Since the FW chip is located on the motherboard, Apple Service had no choice but to change out the motherboard.

It would be very expensive to replace the motherboard if the warranty expired.

The iPod batteries are cheap now and they come with detailed instructions and tools to replace your battery.

You can also try swapping FW cables. Sometimes a cable just gets worn out of time and needs replacing.

3G 20GB. I'm going to test it with my Dad's iPod lead next time I go to visit. Hopefully just the battery... else I'll be needing a new iBook

Did you try a different FW cable?
