Why would a new ipod mini not hold charge?

I was hoping someone could offer some information on why a brand new ipod mini, when a fully charged according to the indicator, will drain all on its own, even when left off. I have the lock off on it and even when it's supposedly half charge I only get 2 hours worth o fplay. Max. Help! Thanks much,

Also, I'm using a wall adapter and not the PC one. Thanks!
