So what is going on with this Voice Recording feature?

"Voice recording settings:
Low (22.05 KHz, mono)
High (44.1 KHz, stereo)"

Do you need an extra device to record audio, or is this built in?

Probably for 3rd party recorders that can be attached... I see no microphone on the pictures. I like this part though: "Upgradable firmware enables support for future video formats"

Someone please answer this ASAP. I've been looking all over the web about this, but none of the new reviews cover it. I'm very glad to hear it supports recording in a higher sample rate. Apple crippled earlier iPods so they can't record in such high quality. I really hope that this means a new firmware release that allows earlier iPods to record with this quality.

If not, the screw it. I'll be using minidisc.

Here's hoping XVID is supported soon. Heck, at least AVI, MPEG, and MJPEG digital camera videos should be supported.

well, I know that the 30-second AVI video that my little digital camera takes can be opened in QT Player so It can be transcoded into mp4/h264... I guess that's Apple's way of "supporing" AVI, MPEG, and MJPEG

HOLY CRAP!

The iPod's audio recording ability is uncrippled in the 5G iPods!

Hell, I take back my bitching about the lack of FireWire. If Griffin or Belkin or someone else releases an add-on that will allow recording at 44.1 KHz stereo, I might actually get one of these regardless!

Sheesh, the one time I get so disillusioned that I quit even checking for this, they finally fix it.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Give petty people just a little bit of power and watch how they misuse it! You can't silence the self doubt, can you?
