I was told the G5 iPod can't be used as an external hard disk to store data other than music, video, vcards...
is this true? any way to work around this?

I too am also curious on this feature. This is something that I would like to have. It would be a waste if I could not use it as a drie as well. If that is the case, maybe I would reconsider the 60gigs.

You can use it an external hard drive but not be able to boot from it in an emergency (that calls for Firewire). Also, if you have to use USB 1.0, transfer times will be quite slow. In iTunes > Preferences > iPod > Preferences, you have to click on the box to Enable Hard Disk Usage.

Awesome, glade that you can still use that featuer. Sucks that you can not boot it as a drive though! Firewire will be missed!

I think there is software that will do that. Does anyone know them?

You need a Firewire-enabled iPod to boot. No software will change that. The 5G iPods will not do that.
