Apple says that the indicated icon means the iPod "needs service." I'd contact Apple for advice on this one, since it seems that your iPod is indicating it has a serious problem. Sorry.

I had the same problem. The USB cable does not seem to charge the ipod enough. I even tried exchanging it. The first thing I did was go down to the apple store they plug it into one of the fire wires and it unlocked it. I went home and with in three hours it was locked with a dead battery and was not working using the USB plugged into the wall outlet or the USB 2.0 on the computer. The next day I tried charging it on my car charge and for whatever reason it would unlock and recharge it. This was a pain in the A$$. I went down to apple and they where very helpful I told them my problem and they gave me a free fire wire and wall outlet adapter. Since then I am having no problems charging my ipod.

I don't think this is a charging problem. it's a hard disk problem. The clicking you hear is the hard drive head searching. Your iPod, like my silver 6GB mini, is pretty much dead. I also tried resetting my iPod and putting it into disk mode. Neither worked.
You can contact Apple, but most likely they'll tell you you need to send in your iPod for service. They charge $39.95 for the shipping and handling and stuff. BUT- if your iPod is still within six months of new, there's no charge for that. You just need to go to www.apple.com/support follow the links and such. If your iPod is still under the one-year warranty, but more than six months old, you can buy the extended AppleCare (a good idea anyway, and only $47 for education customers), and once your iPod is enrolled, then send it in because it will be free.
I sent mine in this weekend, and hope to get it back all fixed up and healthy again soon. Good luck!

Are you sure they charge you to send it in within the last 6 months of the warranty?

Pretty sure. That's why I went ahead and bought the AppleCare extended warranty. I'll try to find where I read that...

Whoo-hoo! I got my iPod mini back today from the Apple repair center. Turns out that instead of just putting a new hard drive in my old mini, they sent me what appears to be a brand new mini, with the engraving from my old one on it. I'm impressed! Granted, they probably have quite a few minis just sitting around now that they don't sell them anymore, but still, pretty impressive. And it took only a week for the round trip. I wish you luck with your repair!
