I have a 60Gb iPod photo. Now I have this on auto update and connect via firewire to my iMac. Basically I sit my iPod on it dock let it do its thing and then leave it there for the rest of the evening which is a good 4-5 hours. Now taking into account before I first put the iPod onto the dock it had a healty charge it then updates and says its charging for 4-5 hours. But when I come back to it after shutting down I take the iPod off the dock and it wont even start it displays the silver Apple then the screen craps out? The only way I can get it working again is to charge over night from the mains? Why is this?

I was told by apple that the fire wire will not charge the ipod throught the computer. If you are going to use the fire wire you have to have the wall outlet adapter.

The 60GB iPod photo WILL charge through the Firewire cable from the computer.

It will also sync via Firewire.

It is only the newest generation, the nano and the iPod video, that will not sync via Firewire, though IME they do load the battery.

Hamsher, does the same thing happen when you connect it directly to the machine (i.e. remove the dock and plug the cable into the iPod directly)?

How about different cables? Does it work with the USB cable?

I have done some testing. And it seems that when I sync my iPod it drains the battery alot so much infact if it doesnt have a full charge it will almost kill the iPod and it also seems that charging from my iMac does not supply the same charge as from the mains infact I would say the there is almost a 50% difference. But I am yet to try different cables with or without the dock.

Firewire connections put a specific current draw limit on each device connected, as does USB. Your wall charger probably has no such limit. I find my iPod -also a 60GB Photo model- charges far faster from the wall charger than from the computer, and it's almost certainly because the connection manages how much power each device is allowed, while the wall charger lets the iPod have as much as it wants.

Now your description draws notice for a number of reasons. Your iPod should charge via firewire, but it sounds like it isn't. If you let it sit in the dock after an update does it eventually charge?

Are you connecting it directly to your iMac (in other words, not using a hub of any kind)? Have you tried a different firewire port? You're sure that the iPod says that it is charging when it is connected to the computer?
