One thing i've always wished apple would do was use a universal format for the iPod (as they did with the shuffle). right now my 5G iPod is formatted as a mac iPod (HFS). on past versions of the iPod i formatted it for PC so i could use it as external storage for both windows and mac machines. id much rather just have an HFS enabler for windows so i dont have to do all my updates on a windows machine. does anyone know of a free one?

Why not reformat it as FAT32? Everything (including a toaster [running NetBSD]) can ready FAT32.

i can. its what ive done on my two previous iPods. i would prefer to keep it HFS though because its a bit faster on the mac than FAT32. also in using FAT32 it locks me into all future software updates being applied via a windows machine. so i was just asking if anyone knew of an HFS enabler for windows that was free.

I don't know a free one, but MacDrive from Mediafour works very well. I've got version 5 (fairly old now) and it still works very well on XP.

HFVExplorer is free but I've never tried it with an iPod.
