My roommate's brother's iPod Shuffle has been acting up and I'm trying to figure out what's wrong for him.

When you press play on the shuffle, the green and orange lights flash.

Then, when connecting the Shuffle to the computer, nothing happens. iTunes acts like it is recognizing the shuffle (with the multi-color wheel spinning), but nothing happens until you disconnect the shuffle.

I have heard reports that the latest iPod update may have done something to do this, but I'm not sure.

Is there any way to hard reset the iPod? I have tried running past iPod updater software, but it does the same thing iTunes does (spinning color wheel).

Any help would be great! I'm running iTunes 6.0.1 and have Mac OS X 10.3.9. But the Shuffle is usually used on Windows XP. My roommate runs XP, so if there's a way to hard reset it on that, please let me know too.

Thanks in advance for any help!
