I was going to purchase a remote to use with the 3G and 5G iPods we own.
But i seems our leading choice the iJet wil not work at all with the video iPod.
In fact I have not been able to find any wireless remote control that works with the newest iPods since they lost taht extra port on top.

Are there any being made yet?

Well, there's the Apple remote, although the iPod has to be in the dock to use it, and it won't work with the 3G iPod.

Griffin's AirClick has been upgraded to support the nano and video iPods. Google "AirClick" or go to http://www.griffintechnology.com

It pisses me off to no end that Apple removed the remote plug for the latest round of 'Pods. Don't get me wrong... I realize they did this *partly* due to size/cost constraints, but I feel they could have found a way to still have it in there.

The problem now (apart from having to buy new remotes, voice recorders, FM receivers/senders, etc.) is that all the new add-ons will eat up the dock connector thus disallowing us to charge our iPods while using these new accessories. Unless all third parties start building in a dock connector pass-thru, we're screwed.

This bums me out.

OK, I might be being a bit thick here but has anyone tried an original Apple remote with the 5G?

Assuming you mean the remote for the oldest iPods, they won't work -- only the original iPods have the proper receptors.

That makes it worthless to me. To use the remote one would have to take up the dock connector meaning that the only audio out would be through the headphone jack. The line out through the dock connection was far better when one used an iPod in a car or with speakers.

On top of that most of the dash holders for iPods would block the remote interface or cause difficulty in mounting the iPod in the car. At home the same problem arises when you can't use the iPod in speaker systems that use the dock connection.

While the Apple dock and remote claim to work they cost almost double the price of previous generation solutions to the same function.

These are good, solid points that echo my own: Unless these companies start releasing dock-connecting peripherals with a dock-power connector pass-through, we're in a sketchy situation.

The worst part is that I seriously doubt companies will add such a pass-though as it will cost more to make and likely force them to pay a licence fee to Apple for use of the connector.

This makes all of us the losers in this game.

I wouldn't be shocked if Apple brought the remote connector back in the 6G iPod.
