I had my 4g scrolly wheel ipod die on me about 6 months ago, bought apple care, and got a replacement. Now the new one has died. Almost the Same thing, exclamation point folder (but no sad ipod this time), unable to restore system software. Anyone else with this problem? Both times this happened, it was after exposure to light moisture and cold temps (snowboarding). No serious falls, no shock...just unreadable system software. Seems kind of odd for a moisture/ temperature related problem (if that's what it is). Is there a history of this kind of problem with this model? No one else I know personally has had it happen.
The large print giveth, and the small print taketh away

Are you exposing the iPod to temps below its rated range? Could be the source of the problem.
Apple's website lists the 5G iPod at 32°F - 95°F (0°C - 35°C) and a max altitude of 10,000 feet. I'd presume the 4Gs to be similar.
Might want to think about a nano if you're going to be using your iPod in this manner (snowboarding). The cold temps likely stresses the HD far more than it would solid-state FLASH RAM.
