It may take up to 10 seconds for my brand spankin new video ipod to respond when I select a song. It's also common for it to go the next song after the one i selected. What's the deal? My previous iPods have never behaved this way.

Has anyone else here had this problem?

I'm not sure if this is your problem, but I have heard of a problem related to album art. You can try unchecking the "album art" option in the iPod preferences and syncing your iPod. Then check the "album art" option and sync again. People say this has worked for them.

I gave that a shot, but it unfortunately did not solve my problem. Just to confirm, you wanted me to disable album art, update my ipod, and then enable album art, and update my ipod again (bringing it back to its original state). Correct?

Yes. If that didn't work, you could try restoring it to the factory settings with the iPod updater software. That's about all I can think of I'm afraid.

Remove the extra clocks in the background. Too many of them cause the iPod to slow to a crawl especially when navagating through menus while playing songs. Should have no more than 2 if necessary.

I've got 4 clocks and don't have any particular problem with speed.

The response on my 30gig model is awful. While clicking "next" through playing music, it often takes two seconds into the new song to display the title, artist, and album.

Same here on a 60GB. Kind of a PITA, but not a deal breaker, by any means.

To dislike Sinatra is a sign of highly questionable taste. To dislike the Beatles is a serious character flaw.

Same here, but again. Not a deal-braker. I guess it do take some times to load 100+ song names in.

I've been using Tune tech to "optimize" my iPod drive after loading a whole bunch of movies and songs on it and it seems to fix some of the lagginess.

Same here. My iPod (30 GB 5G) feels like Jaguar.

Defrag or reformatting and putting everything back on works for all my pc's and laptops, I assume the filing system on the Ipod is similar and files get fragmented after a while. Is it possible to run defrag on an Ipod ?

There's no way that this guy's brand new iPod needs to be defragged. And yes, the 5G iPod's menus can be slightly more sluggish than previous models, but taking up to 10 seconds to respond is definitely not normal. I would contact Apple about it.
