Perhaps someone can answer this for me. I have a car that currently has no sound system and I'm looking for an inexpensive way to use my iPod in the car. I know I could buy a deck that has synching capabilities or even a line in, but I really don't need a head unit or a reciever - all I'm going to do in the car is listen to the iPod (and drive, of course). What I was wondering was this: could I take an ordinairy off the shelf car amplifier - the kind usually used to power sub-woofers - and hook it up under my dash, connect it to my speakers and run the iPod through the audio-in on the amp? Would this work? How would the sound quality be? I can't find any info on the web about this, so even if you don't know the answer yourself, if you do know where I might find it, please point me in the right direction. Thanks.

I don't think your plan will work. I'm sure the amp will require some preamplification to get acceptable volume levels (that's what the head unit would do). The output from the iPod's headphone jack isn't going to provide a high enough level to drive the amp.

You could just go for one of the portable iPod speaker systems.

It might be possible.

But Butch Hauke has a point.

Are there any amps out there with line-in jacks similar to a headphone jack? This is what I would look for.

But if you're going to spend the money on an amp, you might as well buy a cheap head unit with a line-in/aux port as well. It would really simplify the process. Plus, you'd have AM/FM radio in the rare case of an emergency or for local traffic/weather info.

There are car audio systems that include line in jacks, some on the front panel, a LOT on the rear, and some have both. They are not in the top tier of pricing, either.

How did you wind up with a car with NO audio system at all?

Thanks for the info. The car is a 1961 Rambler Super Classic, and the original radio isn't there. I have one to replace the old radio, but it's just for looks - it doesn't work. My idea was to have the non working radio installed in-dash, and then just have the amp bolted in under the dashboard (tons of room to do that in a car from '61). I did find this on the web, but I suspect that it could be somewhat underpowered. Anyone have any insights on these plans: http://www.zpcir.ict.pwr.wroc.pl/~ja...am/indexe.html

Thanks

After thinking about this a bit more, I am pretty sure most amps are low-level inputs.

All you would need is a cable with a 1/8" male headphone plug on one end that splits into male stereo RCA plugs. These are available nearly anywhere. Radioshack certainly has them.

You would then control the volume with your iPod and the amp would drive the speakers.

Are there any brands of amplifiers you are currently looking at? You could always try emailing their customer service or engineering departments for an answer.

Good luck.
