I just got a new replacement iPod a month ago for my old 20 GB 4th generation. It stops syncing halfway through my iTunes library, it is very unresponsive, and it's just f'ed up. I'm gonna restore it, hopefully that will work...
Apparently, I'm a sig violator. I feel honored. Oops.

Try restoring it from the iPod Software Updater. If that does not work then the Hard drive has failed. This is usually what happens after the iPod suffers an impact like dropping it.

Good luck.
