iPod Nano DOA?

My mother-in-law bought an iPod Nano for her youngest daughter for Christmas and then left to our vacation destination. The iPod Nano was left behind for me to then get working with Mac, fill with music, and then bring up as I am meeting them later (we live in Bermuda, but are spending Christmas in Canada).

The Nano is a 2GB and was purchased about 3 weeks ago from the Apple website. It came and has just been sitting in its box, unopened, until tonight.

I took it out and plugged it in to their Mac - an iMac with the flatscreen and a G4. It has OS 10.3.9 on it, and iTunes 6. I originally tried a port on the keyboard, but then noted that in the manual it says not to use those due to not enough power - that explained why there was no response from the Mac or the Nano.
So I switched to the one in the back, neither the Mac responded, nor the Nano.

So I tried to install the CD files, thinking that perhaps the files already on the machine were outdated - but no, the CD ran and didn't want to install since the existing files (from updates) were newer.

So I thought maybe it was due to the older USB ports on the iMac. So I brought it over to my place to use on my Powerbook G4. I plugged it in and it didn't respond on here either.

So now I am wondering if the unit is dead.

If it is dead, I don't suppose there are many options open to me in order to get this unit up to Canada are there?

Any suggestions?

Okay, now a few days later, it turned itself on. It was plugged into my Powerbook, I hadn't touched it and then it just decided to light up.

Now it is sitting at the screen where you pick the language, but the circle pad is unresponsive (I tried the "Hold" button in both positions, neither get it working).

We bought another one in the States and will return this one. Very odd.

The only issue with using an older USB port with the Nano is speed, as long as you plug it directly into the Mac's USB port or a powered hub.

We had a DOA nano -- it worked normally as a stand-alone unit, but if it was connected to a computer, the audio output from the headphones got hosed. It only happened when connected to a computer -- if the dock cable was plugged into a power adaptor, all was well. We returned it, and my wife is using the second nano with her Powerbook G4 (with old USB ports) with no problems. I imagine other people might have this problem and not even know it, if it only affected the headphone output and not the line-out from a dock.
