my ipod mysteriously cleared all its songs off itself last night when i turned it off so when it turned on it had no music on it. when i plugged it in and opened itunes it gave me this message " Itunes cannot read the contents of Ipod. use the ipod software updater application to restore the ipod to factory settings." should i download the newest version of itunes or should i uninstall the version i have now and reinstall it.

Do what it says. Use the iPod software updater to restore your iPod.

Please note that message is telling you to install the 'iPod Software Updater Application' you'll find on the cd-disc that came with the iPod, it is not telling you about to install-uninstall-update your actual version of iTunes. Of course the newer the iTunes version installed the better.

This is the icon of the iPod Software Updater application, maybe you have it inside the Utilites folder…
